Acrostic Poetry

The lesson originally included acrostic poetry and limericks but the limericks proved to be a little too complicated for most of the girls. A few were able to do the limericks but most just stuck with making acrostic poems. I began the lesson by explaining how an acrostic poem worked and put several simple examples on the board. The lesson can be downloaded at the bottom of this page. They were:

SKY

So nice and blue
Keep on looking at it
You should look

TIGER

Tame
Is cute
Gold eyes
Ears are big
Really lazy

I then asked the students to think of words we could use to make poems as a class. Soju, Tiger, Korea, Mokpo, kimchi, TVXQ, Jach (Zach), Zebra, and English were the most popular ones used by all classes.

I then asked the students to write at least three acrostic poems of their own. I went around and had the best 7-9 poems be written on the board and then the whole class would say the poems aloud. I gave the girls 15-20 minutes to compete their poems.

Barack Obama

Obama is very handsome
Barack Obama have a nice father
And he speech is excellent
Mother of Obama a white man

(The fact she knew who Barack Obama was blew me away).

Mango

Mango juice is very delicious

Natural mango juice is good for you
Go drink!!!

(I thought this one was awesome! Students are miserable and there have been student deaths as well..so kudos to this student for writing whats on her mind!!)

Feedback. The girls really seemed to have fun with the poems and being able to be creative. They really seem to enjoy creative writing and I will try to incorporate more of it into my lessons in the future. The Barack Obama poem surprised me. I never expected them to know who he has. I was impressed!
