Birthday

I turned 25 (26 Korean) today (July 20, 2008). I feel good. I had a great celebration last night. I’ve never been one to really celebrate my birthday but living in a new country calls for new experiences to be had. It was pretty low key and consisted of drinking at the Drunk Chicken Hof in Old Mokpo, hopping to the Texas Moon (Magic Sparkle) bar then off to a noreabang (karaoke/singing room). Good turnout of people too. I have to admit it was touching for me. It was so nice to see so many people come out and celebrate with me. The hangover wasn’t as much fun as the actual festivities!

Summer Break

Summer break is quickly approaching. Some teachers are already on their breaks. Mine supposedly starts tomorrow at 11:30. Why supposedly? I’m working “camps” till the end of July. These “camps” run from 4-6 in the evening and consist of two classes, the best thirty students from the first and second grades. It will be easy enough that’s for certain. What gripes me is that I’m not being paid extra for these which I thought they were supposed to according to the law. I will check my contract to confirm this.

Anyways, it should be an easy couple of weeks by the looks of it. My summer break begins August 1 and I have 16 days off which isn’t too bad (could be better, but meh). Hoping to make to Jeju-do for the first time and a return trip to Seoul to the Yongsan Plaza to fulfill my nerdly passions (aka buying an lcd monitor).

South Korean Woman Shot And Killed in North Korea

Last Friday, Park Wang-ja, a South Korean tourist, was shot and killed by North Korean soldiers during a trip to the Mount Geumgang resort Friday July 11. Park went to the resort with friends to celebrate her birthday and was shot twice around 5 a.m. by North Korean soldiers. She was shot in the back and buttocks. The North claimed she was in a restricted military zone. The North is demanding an apology from South Korea and says it will ban further trips to the resort. The killing has been denouced by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

The North’s stance is that Park had entered deep into a highly restricted military zone by herself. Soldiers then spotted her and shouted at her to stop and fired warning shots.  She was then shot and killed.

There are different things being circled around the inter web about this. The North places Park’s time of death at 4:50 a.m. Friday morning. Security cameras at the resort show her leaving at 4:30, meaning everything that happened took place within a twenty minute time frame. The soldiers apparently spotted her after she had walked 2.3 kilometers, fled another kilometer, then was shot 200 meters later by soldiers. I don’t know many fifty something women who can walk over three kilometers in twenty minutes.

Also, the fence that the North was using to blockade off the restricted area was hardly effective. The fence suddenly ends and there is a pile of sand.  There appear to be no warning signs or anything of the sort (though in North Korea you should have common sense in where you’ll walk). She may have assumed it was alright to walk there because it was not blockaded. Either way a woman is dead.

South Korea has offered to sent an investigation team to figure out what happened but that has been refused by North Korea. Park’s body has been returned to South Korea where an autopsy will be conducted.

Bosintang (보신탕)

I was at my friend Alex’s place on the weekend for a party he was hosting. He lives at his high school and below him lives the school groundskeeper (Crazy Willie). He is an old man who has a dog farm on school property. They are grown and ultimately eaten as Bosintang (보신탕).

  1. Bosintang (보신탕) is a traditional South Korean soup that includes dog meat as its primary ingredient. The traditions entail that the meat comes from dogs specifically bred for consumption, but numerous investigations by journalists, broadcasters, and animal protectionists find several examples where other breeds have been used as ingredients. The soup is believed to provide additional virility,[1] to those who eat it. The meat is boiled well together with many kinds of vegetables and seasoning for a long time. The taste is enhanced by the addition of garlic, ginger, Welsh onion, some kinds of herbs, perilla seed, and hot pepper.

He has at least eight dogs in his shanty farm and various breeds.

These dogs are beaten as well to keep the meat on them tender for added stamina. I find the whole practice sickening, digusting, immoral, and downright cruel. Apparently some restaurants that serve dog meat humanely kill them. But for the most part they suffer cruel lives and savage deaths.

School Rock Garden

The school has been busy the past couple of weeks installing a rock garden along the front of school property. Previously there was only a small and very old brick wall that was well worn and weather. The rock garden when completed should add more visual appeal to the school. Going there to take pictures was also an excellent chance to try out my new camera.

I put in this last picture because this is the only solar panel I have seen in Mokpo and thought I should make a note of it.

Another New Camera

My Lumix has been working intermittently so I will have to get it repaired. I love the camera (when it works). I went to Kumho World in K/Gwanju today to buy some electronics (including camera). I bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-H10 for 310,000 Won. Included with that came a 1 gig memory stick, nice tripod and carrying case. I’ve been playing around with the camera and I like it. I took a few pictures outside my window to try it out.

I will get my Lumix fixed next month (hopefully). I am enjoying the Sony so far. I’m looking forward to taking it out tonight to Shinae and seeing how it does with nighttime photography. Have a good weekend!!

Well. I’ve just been very lazy the past two weeks. I went to Seoul two weekends ago with Alex, Virginia, Tyrone, Jongwon, and Madeline. It was a pretty great time. Itaewon is a crazy spot. My Lumix Camera crapped out on me as well. Not impressed. Lots has been going on. I have more holidays this week because my students are doing a three day camp. My birthday approaches as well. Twelve days to go (July20).

The heat and humidity have been bloody awful here as well. By 8 in the morning I feel sweaty and gross. By mid-September it should get better. My holidays are now going to be in August instead of July. I had several options to choose from and the one I chose gives me the most time off. I am doing camps at the school that consist of the best 30 students from the first and second grades. The classes run from 4-6 in the evening. Pretty easy and laid back.

The electric guitar I pulled from the garbage pile….WORKS! I need some tuning pegs for it however as well as new strings. But it is alive. Dumpster diving has been fruitful as well. Sunday I hauled home a masive bookshelf which has helped to organize my tiny Officetel.

I also want to write one thing as well: LOCK YOUR DOORS! I made the mistake of forgetting to lock mine Thursday night and I was woken up Friday morning at six to a drunk man wandering into my apartment. Chased him out and all was well. Just be sure to lock your doors.

I’m probably going to Gwanju Thursday to get my camera (hopefully) repaired. Have a good week.

Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Webcams

I’ve been running Hardy Heron on my F500 laptop for two weeks now and I really like this version. It boots up on my laptop (an issue I had with older versions of Ubuntu) and overall is a rather enjoyable experience. I did experience a few system crashes (due to Avant Window Manager and oddly enough Movie Player.

I am having issues getting either one of my web cams to work with Hardy Heron. I have an older Logitech Quick Cam Messenger and a Samsung SPC A30M. Neither will work under Heron. All I get is a black screen in the program Camorama as well as AMSN and Skype.

When I type in the lsusb command into terminal, it shows that the webcam is being indeed detected by Heron. Both webcams actually.

I don’t know how to get them to work. I would love to use the Samsung webcam especially. The Logitech webcam worked in Ubuntu 7.04 as well as Ubuntu Studio. If anyone can offer me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it! I’m currently stumped.

The Time of Year Where….

It’s that time of year in Korea. Rainy season, summer break, and people leaving their jobs in Korea to go back home. I arrived in Mokpo in Mach and already so many people have came and went. A large number of people I consider friends are leaving in the next two months alone! While it’s sad to say goodbyes, there is one plus for those who are still around: free going away stuff!

On Sunday, one friend was having a going away sale and give away. I picked up a bass guitar and amp for 50,000 won ($50), food, laptop bag, drinks, spices, soju, whiskey, and a few books all for free. Packrat heaven (for me anyways).

I wish Monique all the best with her travels home and hope for a safe flight and a great life! Nice knowing you!
